View all articles by Jonathan Elendu and Sowore OmoyeleIn early September, Elendureports.com reported that one of President Obasanjo's sons acquired a property in New York earlier this year. The New York apartment cost a little more than half a million dollars. Soon after our report, Gbenga Obasanjo, the President's first son told some reporters that he was not the owner of the said property in New York. He pointed reporters in the direction of his younger half-brother, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo.
Late last week, John Abebe, brother of Stella Obasanjo, Nigeria's First Lady, confirmed that Olumuyiwa, another son of the President, is the real owner of the property in question. In an apparent coordinated effort at damage control between the Presidency and the Abebe family to douse any controversy such information will create, Abebe told journalists that Olumuyiwa paid for the property with a mortgage loan from a bank. Abebe claims that Olumuyiwa got a mortgage based on his salary of over two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000.00) as an attorney. He also told Daily Independent, a Nigerian newspaper, that Olumuyiwa was called to the Bars of New York and New Jersey states earlier this year. This claim is not true.
Elendureports.com can confirm that, indeed, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo passed the New York Bar examination in February 2005, a month before he bought the half-a-million dollar property in New York. Elendureports.com investigations also show that Olumuyiwa is not a practicing attorney as he has yet to be sworn in to the New York Bar.
Olumuyiwa G. Obasanjo whose New York Bar registration number is 4340162, completed and filed a form for admission to the New York Bar on July 15, 2005. He paid a fee of three hundred and fifty dollars ($350.00). This is a first step in the process of becoming a practicing attorney in New York. A graduate of St. John's University and resident of Brooklyn, Olu Obasanjo should have been admitted to the Supreme Court of New York, Appellate Division 2nd department. The process of becoming a practicing attorney in the State of New York is a multi level one and passing the Bar examination is the starting process. He would need to pass through three boards or committees known as “Committee for Character and Fitness,” which will scrutinize his past records before inviting him for an interview. He must scale these hurdles within three years of passing the Bar exams.
A Nigerian who practices law in the United States told Elendureports.com: "In some states you can be sworn in within two weeks after passing the bar. But it would appear the guy has a character and fitness issue and if that is the case, it may take up to two years to
Elendureports.com investigations of the mortgage claims by Dr. Abebe and the Presidency did not turn up any information that would corroborate their claims. To the best of our knowledge, the said property which cost over five hundred and thirty thousand dollars ($530,000.00) was not paid for with any loans. Records at the city registry of the New York City finance office suggests that no mortgage tax has been paid on the property. An expert suggested that even if Olumuyiwa got a mortgage, he may have been given such ridiculous terms that the mortgage company realized that if they filed the papers they could find themselves in hot water!
Joseph Slater, Olu Obasanjo's agent refused to answer any questions from Elendureports.com. "Whatever you want to confirm you can confirm through public records. Anything I have to say to you is covered by attorney-client privilege." With those words, Slater hung up on our reporter. The title company, Phillip O’hara Associates initially told our reporters that they were not sure if there are any mortgage loans on the property. They asked Elendureports.com to call back for more information and when we did, we were directed to Joseph Slater, Olu Obasanjo’s lawyer.
The claim by John Abebe that Olumuyiwa is a "struggling child" is ludicrous. To many Nigerians and even Americans, it is inconceivable that a 28 year old young man who just graduated from law school and earns over two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000.00) a year can be described as a “struggling child.” There are thousands of tenured professors who earn much less than half what Olu Obasanjo earns.
That Abebe sees a salary of two hundred thousand dollars a year as paltry is a pointer to the mind set of the Obasanjo clan. They are out of touch with reality. This may be the explanation to the question posed by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari when he spoke with us recently: “How can Nigerians be so poor at a time Nigeria is making more money than it has ever made?”

I have for the first time visited your websit. and have read about the story of how Atiku passed parts of his ill earned money through one Otunba Fasaweto the president.
Also your critisizms of the obansejo projects (i.e) the ota farm.
You should realise that the obasenjo farm gives job oppotunity to about more then 3000 nigerians tell me how many nigerians are benefiting from the House bouhgt by VP atiku in the united states
According to your story obasanjo was suprised AND astonished when VP atiku informed that he had alway passed part of his ill gotten money to obj through mr otunba fasawe without his knowledge.
I really cant understand why you are against the force of progress in Nigeria and join forces with the force of evil and distroctions you think the president dont have the legitimate right to question the VP over alledge corrupt practice my question to you are do you think obj is working for the interest of the nation or most we not move forward because some sector of the Nigeria public thinks that the last election was frodulent
Don't know your reason behand your distroctive
write-up against the president you should realize that this write-ups are selfish and cannot be of interest to the general public.
finall it's unfutunate that instead of thinking Nigeria you are thinking of your personal interest.

I wonder if you are truly a prince!!!!

As a matured experienced Nigerian should I be impressed by this article No sir! Its just what its supposed to be..another entertaining story. I will however not only be impressed but also be concerned for our nation..1. If these two guys can show that Olu Obasanjo is a govt official..2. If they can prove that he is a secret proxy for the president in siphoning looted funds..3. If they can expose Olu Obasanjo as someone who stole from our nations treasury. Until then they will merely remain young men who are out for some cheap publicity or at best victims of the syndrome of youthful exuberance. Ebenezer Babatope (I guess he is a chief now) Chuba Okadigbo Lam Adesina etc etc wrote more grandiose stories in their youthful days. But after tasting public offices they became something else!

Why going into peoples private life This is not journalism. Olu Obasanjo is not a public figure and we don't want to know him.

If I continue to debate about the social and political evils in Nigeria I am risking hypertension.
So I will rest the case in the court of the Almighty God. Because when the cookie crumbles none of our leaders would be with us to suffer the crisis. They would have flown out of Nigeria to their safe mansions in America and Europe.

Lekan and those defending Olu Obasanjo just because he is not a public figure are yet to wake to the reality of public figure families. Former US President Bill Clinton's daughter was at Oxford England; how many homes did she buy in England UN's Koffi Annan's son was implicated in the Oil for Food Program in Iraq was the father not investigated and his name dragged to the dust. If Lekan and Co truely believe in what they are saying; why then is Olusagun Obasanjo's government going after Gen. Abacha's wife and children They were not public figures. The public figure I suppose is long death and the family should be left alone. Sikina!!. But any right thinking person that is those who can easily connect two clearly dots will know that it is not sikina. If you're in the public and have children you better know what your children are doing because not only that you share the same family name but the same bloodline. Well how would Olusagun Obasanjo keep track of what his children are doing when he probably do not know how many he has as he is busy making babies with different women instead of focusing on the job at hand -- being the best leaders he can be for Nigeria. Olu Obasanjo went to a school in Queens New York; Big deal how about those Nigerians here in US who worked themselves to Ivy League schools here. The defenders of Olu should be hiding their faces here in US. The Western world is a leveler. Arrest my case.

Lekan you may be old but you are not matured yet. Age has nothing to do with maturity. Wake up to the reality the young Nigerians are coming. These writers are talented in what they are doing -- investigative journalism. The days of Okadigbo and others you cited are long gone. The Internet is here and blogging is an out growth of the Internet. These young Nigerian writers are using the resources presented by the western world to do their investigative work well. The leadership in Nigeria should know that they can hide no more. Those of us who completed university and college education in the 80's and beyond but left to self exile in the western world are using the skills gained here to become a thorn in the leadership skin. You guys thought you accomplished your goal Haahhah!! think again.

Issues were addressed with supporting facts unlike the obsanjos' did. You see the truth will always be the truth unlike in nigeria you can obtain any information you need. Both writers of the article are known to me especially Sowore and i know with certainty that they speak out with fact.

This article is yellow journalism at its best. Where is the prrof Show me the PDF files of the records supporting your claims on Olu Obasanjo and the companies that are fronts for Obasanjo oil cronies. These chaps are bunch of attention seekers..I have been to their site and was not impressed by the the quality of their work in any case. Allegations against leaders of national importance need to be subsatantiated and they should stop playing to the gallery by implicating everyone but themselves. For instance these guys will probably turn to thieves when they get to power..see Oronto Douglas and his so called evironmental activism the way it dissapeared when he became the now discredited governor of Bayelsa state;s info commissioner. It is a disgrace to see Elendu and co lie too! For God sake there is no way you can access Olu Obasanjo mortage information that are protected by privacy laws of America except you urselves are crooks involved in identity theft...amy be Elendu and co are the guys that should be investigated by the FBI..these financial info in america are strictly personal and it is illegal to seek them without the permission of the subject. I am surpised you guys are not pointing this out. Let me make it clear that I am one of the critics of OBJ govt. but to turn around and turn a fight between him VP into a roforofo fight to discredit all government funcitonaries appears to me to be a ploy to drag every one else down with a drowing man! Shame!

Excellent job at replacing the burden of proof on the Obasanjos. They really ought to show us how come a recently qualified lawyer can earn 200l per annum and address other issues raised here. Till then they are denied the benefit of the doubt

i think every right thinking nigerian knows that things are terrible in nijjaso for these guys to come up with these stories is good.pple should not forget that the president is fighting corruption as such he should first clean up his own house.if his family and friends are found wanting they should be brought to book...BUT U KNOW THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN..

Another excellent report from the "Mcintryre" of Nigerian investigative journalism. How Nigeria needs more journalists with the tenacity and sheer bloody mindedness of Elendu!
Claims of a 200K salary for a newly called attorney, bears no resemblance to any facts. It is a lie.
