Mami Wata/Mommy Water
Mami- Wata - African deity of the water and of excess, she is seen as both a mermaid and a beautiful woman walking the streets of modern Africa. Mami Wata is described as having long dark hair, very fair skin and compelling eyes. She loves all things expensive, modern and beautiful. Mami Wata's colors are red and white.
There are many diverse African indigenous/religious traditions, but the most notable are the Mami Water spirits found in various regions along the western coast of Africa. “Maame Water”, also spelled “mami water”, has been a central character in many riverside and coastal communities in West African.
According to local lore, “Maame Water” is a sea goddess -- a source of absolute beauty and money. But, she has also been known to over-turn canoes and lure victims down to her watery kingdom. Fishermen consider "Maame Water" as sacred. She cannot be talked about openly except after certain rituals. Among fishermen in the Niger Delta in Nigeria, "Maame Water" is considered a "powerful woman who is very generous and very jealous". Nigerian folk stories are told about persons whose fortunes have changed dramatically when they married "Maame Water", the mermaid, but lost everything when they became unfaithful to her.
Sources: Excerpt from “Mermaids and End-Time Jezebels” by Rosalind Hackett, Sirenian International.
Mami Wata is also the pidgin English name of the spiritual force also known to Igbo-speakers as Ezenwaanyi (Queen or Chief of Women), Nnekwunwenyi (Honorable Woman), Ezebelamiri (Queen Who Lives in the Waters), and Nwaanyi mara mma (More Than Beautiful Woman.
In some parts of Zaire, she is called Mamba Muntu, or Crocodile Person, sirene or madame poisson. The northern Igbo people living in Oguta know the spirit's local manifestation as Uhamiri. This name is not translated, but it contains the root word mmiri, or water. By her names, then, the images which many Africans have of this spirit are female ones, or at least, as a being personified as partially female and partially fish or reptile. Mami Wata is usually represented, both verbally and iconically, as a woman, but as a woman of a very special type.
In southern Ghana, there are very few Mami Water shrines on the coast and rivers. Pentecostal-charismatic Christianity has become highly prominent and has succeeded in weakening, if not destroying neo-traditional cults. Mami Water cults are more common in the Volta Region, which is predominantly inhabited by the Ewe, who have close social, economic and cultural links with the Ewe in southern Togo. Mami Water shrines are a part of vodu, or in Northern Volta Religion trõ possession cults.

yall are so silly...some Nigerian once told me I was one???? WTF was that supposed to mean??? Anyway, I take it that the mommy water is our version of a Mermaid i.e. half fish half woman. I do not believe they exist because they are fairy tales here.

Yeah, they used to say young pretty girls were "mammy watas" and they were always doing something by the river, either fetching water or washing clothes by themselves. The girls tended to be isolated too.

One day, I was in our village and had to go fetch water for the house, we were so poor back then that we used to eat roasted yam and palm oil for breakfast, garri/ground nut for lunch and drink water for dinner, but we were a happy family, we lived in a hut made out of mud and we had 2 dogs called Skippy (brown and white dog) and Bingo(black). My father was a fisherman and mother a trader in the market, my older brother was a hunter and he was the village sharpshooting champion, they called him "O.S.K" (one shot kill), the next brother to him was the village wrestling Champion, they called him "ologbo" (Cat)cause his back could never touch the ground when he was wrestling, he used to fight for the village and was the King's favourite villager.
There was 11 of us in our Family, 10 boys, 1 girl.
Anyway, I had done 2 trips from the river to our poor but happy home, carrying the pail(bucket) on my head whilst holding another 2 in each arm, I had pail carrying skill, freehand style, I was the village freehand champ.
On my last trip back to the river, (around 9pm), I noticed a beautiful girl by the riverside, but she was covering herself from waist down, this woman had long black hair, full lips, flawless dark brown skin (like Chilli from TLC) and sparkling white teeth, she smiled at me and beckoned for me to come over...when I went over, I said "hello, why are you still lot at this time of the night, when are you going home"
She said she was bored at home and came to the riverside to chill, I told her that it wasn't actually a goodtime to be out alone at night, she asked me if I would keep her company and I said "my mama go dey worrie about me", she smiled and said "you're a good kid, ain't your name Wariboko" I was shocked and asked her she knew my name, she told me she had been watching me from when I was a kid and used to be with my mother next to the river washing our clothes...I said "Why I never see you for here b4", she said "come and sit next to me"...
See I was scared but she was just so stunning plus her nice naked breast were just calling me....
(I'll continue later, cause this is getting to long and I'm getting rather emotional at the memory of me and my mammy water girlfriend)

Yes....yes they do exist. There was this day back in the days of olde, when men were bold.
I was strolling down the street after gulping 9 bottles of Odeku. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a figure following me. Perhaps I should mention here that the path I walk after drinking is by a river.
Anyways, I could not be bothered with the intrusive figure so I continued my stroll whistling in the dead of night. As some of you may know, whistling in the night invites snakes, but in my drunken state, who gives a stinking fart right?
As I continued strolling, 73 snakes just jumped out of the tree in front of me, and took their attack stance. Perhaps it was because of the alcohol in my system, I clearly began to remember a chinese movie I watched as a kid, Snake in a monkeys Shadow, I believe it wa called. As I was not able to do monkey shadow, I figured goat shadow would suffice.
So I took my stand in goat shadow.............it would seem the figure following me had witnessed my techinique before, and knew how deadly it was. Perhaps this was the same figure I beat the crap out of the last time I was drunk. Anyways, the figured rushed forward and told the snakes to go away because I was too strong for them. That was when I noticed that the figure was female.....a very beautiful female, if i might add.
She insisted she wanted to walk me home and make sure I get home safe...I laughed at first, but then I caught a glimpse of her coke bottle figure and agreed, why not? common lets go.
When we got to my place, she fixed me anther drink and must have put something in it, because after the first gulp, I passed out!
Luckily, I am a light sleeper. Somewhere in my sleep, I began to hear weird chantings, "Ade due dembela" I quickly woke up, and lo and behold, the beautiful woman I had brought home was only human from the waist up.
What the..." I began to say. What kind of rubbish is this? If youre going to be half woman and half fish, could you not have switched the halfs?
You can imagine my anger. The intereting part of the woman was all fish......I was so frustrated then I decide to make the best of the situation. I chopped her up.......threw the human part back in the river and proceeded to have fish pepper soup for the next couple of weeks.
